Android 13 for TV Launched : check what’s new

Google has finally launched the stable version for Android 13 for TV. This version won’t be immediately available for any consumer devices. This OS version is mainly for developers and it can be used with your ADT-3 developer kit or Android Emulator for TV.

Android 13 for TV mainly includes changes to improve user experience and compatibility with different TV devices, performance and quality enhancements.

What’s new in Android 13 for TV: Key Highlights

Media & Power

  • Android 13 introduced Anticipatory audio route which allows apps to identify the routed device and supported formats before starting playback.
  • It allow users to change default resolution and refresh rate on supported HDMI source devices.
  • There’s been improvements in MediaSession lifecycle allowing HDMI source to take certain actions based on state change. Which ultimately resulted in better power management.

Input Control & Accessibility

Android 13 for TV comes with features that make interacting with TV more flexible.

  • Support for different keyboard layout for external keyboards
  • Global preferences for enabling audio descriptions across apps
  • Indicator to show state of hardware mute switch in system privacy controls

How to install Android 13 for TV?

If you have the ADT-3 Developer Kit, install a system image by following the instructions given below. Alternatively, you can use the Android Emulator for TV, which allows you to try out some new user interface capabilities like audio routing, keyboard layouts and HDMI state changes.

  • Use the ADT-3 Developer Kit for Google TV.
  • Download the system image listed on this page.
  • Back up your device data before installation.
  • Flash the image onto your ADT-3 device.
